Mealtimes for children
Breakfast is served when children wake.
Lunch is served at 12 noon.
Dinner is served at 5pm.

A menu will be available for your child to make a choice. At all other times, food is always available. This includes cheese and biscuits and ice-cream. Children are also able to choose food from the dining room (also on Floor 5). Please speak to ward staff for more information.

There is also a snack trolley available for children to help themselves at any time.

Parent’s food
Parents are welcome to eat at their child’s bedside or in the parent’s room (just outside the main ward doors) where there is a microwave, instant hot water for drinks and fridge. A key is required for the fridge – see ward staff. Hot drinks are allowed in the ward but please use a tray to carry them. Take-away menus are available in the parents room.

Cash Point
The closest cash point available is within the BRI Hospital. Go through main entrance to BRI, follow corridor. Cash point is just past cashiers office on right.

Playrooms and Play Leaders
Ward 34 has a playroom for use by children on the ward and their families. Sam, the lovely CLIC Sargent play therapist, organises activities for children on weekdays either in the playroom or at children’s bedsides. The playroom remains open at weekends but PLEASE treat toys and equipment carefully so that all children can enjoy this facility.

There is also a Play Centre on Level 5 with a much wider range of activities and an outdoor play area. This is a specific Oncology play session on Wednesday mornings provided children are not in isolation and nursing staff are happy for them to attend. This session is restricted to oncology patients only in order to minimise the risk of infection.

Education
The hospital primary teacher, visits school age children on the ward. The aim is to continue education as normally as the child’s illness allows. Close contact is maintained with the regular school.

Televisions
A television is usually available at each bed and a range of videos and DVD’s can be borrowed from the playroom.
Please can all televisions in the bay area be used only with a headset after 8.30pm so as to reduce the noise level and avoid disturbing other patients and their parents.
