Launch of National Bereavement Survey

The Office for National Statistics (ONS), on behalf of the Department of Health, has launched the first ever national bereavement survey to measure care at the end of life.
The survey will provide important information for key services that provide end of their life care, to help improve people’s experiences at this sensitive time.

The survey, commissioned by the Department of Health, is being sent to 49,000 people across England – one in seven of all those who registered a death between November 2010 and June 2011. It is seeking
their views on the care that their loved one received, as well as the care and support they were given
themselves.

Launch of Regional Lung Cancer Campaign

Through the ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign the Department of Health aims to improve cancer survival rates through achieving earlier diagnosis – and to do this through raising awareness of the symptoms of cancer amongst the general public and encouraging early presentation to the GP and consequently earlier diagnosis.

As part of this work, a five-week regional lung cancer awareness campaign was launched on 10 October in the Midlands and some surrounding areas. The campaign is encouraging people who have had a cough for more than three weeks to see their GP. Cancer Networks have been working with local providers in the area to prepare for the response to the campaign.

Launch of National Bowel Cancer Campaign

The first ever national cancer campaign to increase awareness of bowel cancer symptoms was launched on 16 September.

The campaign will start in January. The ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ awareness ads will aim to make people aware of the early signs of bowel cancer and make it easier for them to discuss this with their GP.

In England, bowel cancer is the third most common type of cancer. An estimated 33,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. An estimated 13,000 people die annually from bowel cancer. It is estimated that, if England had bowel cancer survival rates as good as the best in Europe, 1,700 lives could be saved each year – and a large part of this would be through earlier diagnosis.

As well as running a national bowel cancer symptom, the Department is running a regional trial for a lung cancer symptom awareness campaign and providing funding for a range of local campaigns.

Update on Health and Social Care Bill

Second reading continuation in the Lords.

In addition to debates around whether the reforms represent a move towards the privatisation of the NHS, Peers raised: ensuring proper resources for disabled children and child and adolescent mental health services; commissioning for children with conditions that will not be covered at the national level but of which GPs may have insufficient understanding; implications of Academies and free schools on local authority resources; whether Healthwatch will be sufficiently independent and transition arrangements between local involvement networks (LINks) and local Healthwatch; whether arrangements to secure coterminosity between clinical commissioning groups and local authorities are sufficiently robust; and the need for stronger legislation in relation to public health.

The Minister confirms governments commitment to amend the Bill to put it beyond doubt that the Secretary of State remains responsible and accountable for a comprehensive health service.

The Bill is passed, and Committee Stage is scheduled to begin on 25 October.

The public wants more choice of NHS care

The public wants more say and greater choice over their NHS healthcare according to a new patient survey carried out by an independent research company on behalf of the Department of Health.

The new survey of 5,000 people reveals that over 80 per cent of patients want more choice over how and where they are treated in the NHS and nearly three quarters of patients want more choice in who provides their hospital care.

Full results of the survey show that:
• 80.88 per cent of respondents want more choice in where they are treated in the NHS
• 78.62 per cent of respondents want more choice in how they are treated in the NHS
• 49.52 per cent of respondents were not aware that they can choose which hospital to go to for non- emergency treatment
• 74.88 per cent of respondents wanted a choice over which hospital consultant is in charge of their care
• 74.62 per cent of respondents wanted a choice over which hospital consultant is in charge over their children’s care.

Women and older people in particular want to see more patient choice in the NHS. Nine out of 10 people over the age of 55 want to have a greater say in how and where they are treated. Under the Government’s modernisation plans, patients will be able to choose, not only where, but which NHS consultant team provides their hospital care.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said:
“This is clear evidence that patients want more choice and control over their healthcare, which is exactly what our plans to modernise the NHS are all about. Patients no longer want to settle for second best – they want what’s best for them and their families and they don’t want to be restricted by geographical boundaries or bureaucratic rules.

Patient choice in the NHS has been very limited, but that is about to change. We want to see a health service that works around patients – not the other way around. The NHS should be there to serve patients and the public – not vested interests. That’s why we’re modernising the NHS and improving patient choice.â€
